I. Constitution Reviews

The Committee reviewed the constitutions of Blacksmithing Enthusiasts Club (Hobby, funded), Tarana (Arts/Performance, restricted funded), and Biodiesel Project (constitution change) recommending the groups for approval.

The Committee reviewed the constitutions of Not for Sale, Alpha Phi Omega and Italian Student Association and requested a clarifications in the documents.

II. Other Business

The Committee reviewed the constitution review process in order to find ways to make constitution writing and review easier and less time consuming for student organizations and the Committee. The Committee agreed to move forward with a plan to improve the Constitution generator and require all submissions to come through the generator, which should substantially decrease the amount of time the review process takes.

The Committee reviewed the constitutions of: Capoiera (Arts/Performance, Restricted funded), Psychology Council of Majors (Academic/Departmental, Funded), and East Asian Film Club (Category TBD, funded) recommending the groups for approval.

The Committee reviewed the constitution of Student Union of Arabs and requested a few clarifications.

II. Revocation of Recognition

Corin Gioia, OSL Coordinator for Fraternity & Sorority Life, informed the Committee that Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority, Inc. is not incompliance with the 5-Member Rule. The Committee recommended the revocation of this organization's recognition in accordance with the SGA Student Organizations Policy.

I. Constitution Reviews

The Committee reviewed the constitutions of: the Game Developers Club (category and funding status remain the same) and NSBE (category remains the same, funding status changes to funded status) recommending the constitution changes for approval.

The Committee reviewed the constitution of Alpha Phi Omega Interest Group, which is requesting a constitution and name change, and requested clarification on a few minor areas. The organization is looking into these areas and will meet with the SOC again in the Spring semester.


The Committee also reviewed the constitution of the Blacksmith's Guild of UMBC; upon reviewing the constitution, the committee needs additional information regarding the group's activities.

II. The Committee will meet again in the Spring 2010 semester.

I. Constitution Reviews

The Committee reviewed the constitutions of: Off the Richter (Arts/Performance, restricted funded), CWIT Student Council (Academic/Departmental, restricted funded), the French Society (Cultural/Ethnic, funded), and the Interdisciplinary Film Association (Arts/Performance, funded) and recommended them for recognition


The Committee reviewed the constitutions of: the Commuter Student Association and Game Developers Club (GDC) and requested revisions. GDC has a current constitutuional amendment process through which it must approve any revisions. Commuter Student Association will be attending the next SOC meeting.

The Committee reviewed the NSBE and Commuter Student Association constitutions and requested revisions. NSBE has a current constitutuional amendment process through which it must approve any revisions. Commuter Student Association will be attending the 12/4 SOC meeting.

II. Meeting with SGA Executives re: Student Orgs Policy

The SOC met with the SGA President, VP, Speaker of the Senate, and Treasurer to discuss the Student Organizations Policy.

The Committee reviewed the requested changes to the SEA Constitution and the organization had a few revisions that needed the organization's final approval before recommendation.

I. Review of Wushu/Tai Chi Club categorization

The Committee reviewed the Wushu/Tai Chi Club's constitution and talked with its current president to determine if the Sports/Recreation categorization of the club was fitting. The Committee, with the help of the President of the organization, determined the club to be a Hobby club.

II. Review of Constitutions

The Committee reviewed the Secular Student Alliance (Service/Social Action, funded) application for recognition and recommended the organization for approval.

The Committee reviewed the Ideas Unbound: Project X constitution and asked the group to clarify it's purpose/activities for the purpose of categorization (sports club vs. intellectual sport).

I. Constitution Reviews

The Committee reviewed the American Studies Council of Majors (Academic/Departmental, funded) application for recognition and recommended the organization for approval.

The Committee performed a preliminary review for UMBC Paintball to determine whether it was a sports/recreation club based on its constitution and determined that it was. The group was referred to the Athletics Department for recognition.

II. Constitution Amendments

The Committee reviewed the requested changes to the JSU Constitution and approved the changes.

III. Update to Student Organization Recognition Changes

The Committee reviewed the final list of student organizations that will lose recognition. Those organizations are:

III. Membership of Greek Organizations Review

The Committee received updated information regarding fraternity & sorority membership, reviewd its decision from the previous meeting and placed the following two organizations on probation for failure to meet the 5-member rule in accordance with the SGA Student Organizations Policy:

Lambda Theta Alpha
Kappa Alpha Psi

The Committee revoked its earlier decision to place Sigma Gamma Rho on probation as it is currently in compliance with the 5-member rule.

As these organizations are Greek and have additional requirements to become recognized and recruit members, these organizations have until February 15th to reach five members in accordance with the SGA policy.


IV. Review of Table Tennis Club categorization

The Committee reviewed the Table Tennis Club's constitution and talked with its current president to determine if the Sports/Recreation categorization of the club was fitting. The Committee, with the help of the President of the organization, determined the club to be a Hobby club.

V. Committee Work Planning

The Committee discussed its plans for the 2009-10 year and determined that it should review the process to update the Student Organizations Policy.

VI. The Committee welcomed its newest member to ghe board, Rosey.

I. Review Applications for Recognition

The Committee reviewed and recommended the following organization for recognition:
Drumline (funded, arts/performance)

The Committee reviewed the
Apostolic Campus Ministries constitution and recommended clarification on membership requirements.

The Committee reviewed the BJJ/MUAAY Tai MMA Club constitution and determined it to be a sports/recreation club. The organization will need to be recognized by Athletics.

II. Constitution Changes

The Committee reviewed and approved a constitution update to the membership clause for DEVICE. The organization is now a funded (previously restricted-funded) organization.

III. Membership of Greek Organizations Review

The Committee placed the following two organizations on probation for failure to meet the 5-member rule in accordance with the SGA Student Organizations Policy:

I. Welcome to Student Orgs Committee
The Student Orgs Committee welcomed its new members to the committee.

II. Orientation to Our Work
The Committee reviewed its role and the opportunities to it has to advocate for student organizations.

III. Overview of the SGA Student Organizations Policy
The Committee reviewed the Student Orgs Policy to ensure that all members knew the policy.

IV. Overview of the definition of a Sports/Recreation Club.
The Committee reviewed the mutually agreed upon (between the Stu Orgs Committee & Athletics) definition of a sports club. This is used in the review of applications for recognition as a student organization.
1. There are currently three organizations that are recognized as a Sports/Recreation Club by SGA (and therefore, are not financially supported by SGA) but are not recognized by Athletics as a Sports/Recreation Club (and therefore, are not supported by Athletics). The Committee agreed to ask the three organizations to meet with them at their next meeting to discuss options to remedy this situation.

V. Overview of the year ahead
The committee reviewed the timeline of student organization registration & what a typical Committee meeting might look like; it also reviewed project opportunities including reviewing/updating the Student Orgs Policy.

VI. Review Applications for Recognition
